We all know that plastic is bad for the environment. It takes hundreds of years to decompose, and in the meantime, it pollutes.
It’s not just your toothbrush. It’s your phone case, your water bottle, your Tupperware, your child’s toy. Plastic is everywhere, and we are using it more than ever before. In 1950, the world’s population used about 15 million tons of plastic. In 2016, we used more than 400 million tons. And, according to one estimate, we could be using over a billion tons by 2050.
Most of this plastic is not recycled. In the U.S., we only recycle about nine percent of our plastic waste. The rest ends up in landfills or in the environment – like in the ocean. In fact, it’s estimated that there are now five trillion pieces of plastic floating in the world’s oceans. And those pieces of plastic are harming marine life.
So, how did we get here? How did our toothbrushes become part of the plastic crisis?
It all started with the invention of synthetic plastics. In 1907, Leo Baekeland created Bakelite, the first fully synthetic plastic. This new material was strong and durable and could be molded into any shape. It was also cheap to produce.
Plastics quickly became popular. By the 1930s, they were being used in everything from car parts to cooking utensils. And by the 1950s, plastics were everywhere.
The problem is that plastics are not biodegradable. They can take hundreds or even thousands of years to break down. And when they do finally breakdown, they release harmful chemicals into the environment.
So what can we do about it? How can we reduce our use of plastic?
One way is to switch to bamboo toothbrushes. Bamboo is a sustainable material that grows quickly and doesn’t require pesticides or fertilizers. Bamboo toothbrushes are just as effective as plastic ones, and they’re much better for the environment.
Another way to reduce your plastic usage is to avoid single-use plastics like straws, water bottles, and grocery bags. Bring your own reusable straws, water bottles, and bags with you when you go out.
We can’t completely get rid of plastic. But we can reduce our use of it. And that’s a start.
